An Apple a Day

'Tis the season to get healthy

December 21, 2015

It’s that time of year when the world slows down just a bit. Friends gather. Families reunite. And travel brings us new and exciting things to see and explore.

With all the holiday trappings of food and drink and couch-lounging, it may not seem an ideal time to focus on our health, but this is precisely the time to do so.  In fact, it’s during these quiet, reflective moments when we are free to let our minds wander to things besides our home and workplace to-do lists that we should redirect our thoughts to our well-being.

This is the time of year where we take stock of our health and look for areas where we can improve. For you, this may involve ditching the cigarettes or reducing your salt intake. It may mean realizing that you need to exercise more and eat less. Perhaps you need to carve out more free time in your life for family, entertainment and fun hobbies. Or it could be that you finally admit that it’s time to make an appointment with your health care provider for a much-needed check-up.

So, this holiday season – take inventory of your health. Give serious thought to how it could improve. Then, look ahead and draw up a plan in the New Year to make it happen – for yourself and your family.  Doing so helps to give you your best shot at staying healthy and happy for many years to come.

And be sure to check in with us here at Riverside University Health System—Public Health. We have many programs and services that we know you will find helpful in your quest for your best health and wellness.

The time to get your flu shot is now

December 10, 2015

It’s National Influenza Vaccination Week. Roughly 200,000 people are hospitalized every year in the U.S. from complications of the flu. About 36,000 of them will die.
Getting the flu shot is the easiest and single most effective step you can take to avoid the flu during the annual flu season.

The flu and pneumonia are the eighth highest cause of death right here in Riverside County.

Right here in Riverside County, our flu vaccination rate is almost 26 percent below the statewide average. We can do better. By taking advantage of clinics set up throughout the county, many of them providing free, or low-cost vaccinations, we can help prevent the spread of disease.

Immunization has saved millions of lives and it will continue to save millions more if we keep at it. Our communities need all the help they can get to make sure people are protected. It is incumbent upon us to do everything we can to make it possible and it starts with getting everybody immunized to help prevent them from getting sick in the first place.

Best of all, everyone benefits when we get immunized against the flu. It means we reduce our risk of serious complications. We increase our quality time with friends and loved one. It means we preserve our health.
