Testing and Treating Lead Poisoning
Testing Children for Lead
All children should have a blood lead test at ages one and two. Children who missed their tests and are ages three through five should be tested. Those covered by Healthy Families, Child Health and Disability Prevention (CHDP), and Medi-Cal are eligible for free blood lead testing. Anyone who feels that they are at risk for lead poisoning should ask their doctor for a blood lead test, or contact their nearest Riverside County Family Care Centers. Call our program to get more information about testing at 1-800-346-6520.
Testing Household Items for Lead
Hard household surfaces, such as painted walls, dishes, pottery, and toys can be tested for lead using a simple lead test kit. These test kits are available at hardware and building supply stores like Home Depot and Ace Hardware. One test kit, the Lead Check Swab, can be ordered directly from 1.800.242.4325.
Treating Lead Poisoning
Removing the source of lead and eating a healthy diet is the best way to treat lead poisoning. If lead levels are extremely high, hospitalization may be required along with a chelating medicine, which helps to remove lead from the body.
