Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program
A Free Prenatal Program for Pregnant Women On Medi-Cal

The Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program (CPSP) was developed and implemented by the California Department of Health Services (DHS) to reduce mortality among low income pregnant women and infants in California.

It is a Medicaid-funded perinatal health care program which coordinates nutrition, psychosocial and health education services with clinical obstetrical care to improve maternal and infant outcomes.

What are the Comprehensive Perinatal Services?

  • Patient Orientation to CPSP
  • Assessment, reassessment, interventions and follow-up services in:
    • Obstetrics
    • Nutrition
    • Health Education and
    • Psychosocial Services
  • Individual Case Coordination
  • Prenatal Vitamin and Mineral Supplements
  • Perinatal and Parenting Education classes, individual or group
The goals of the program are:
  • To decrease the incidence of low birth weight in infants
  • To improve the outcome of every pregnancy
  • To give every baby a healthy start in life
  • To lower health care costs by preventing chronic illness in infants and children
CPSP Provides reimbursement from conception through 60 days postpartum for Fee-For-Service:
  • Assessment, reassessment, and intervention/treatment in obstetrics, nutrition, health education and psychosocial services
  • Case Coordination
  • Perinatal and Parenting Classes
  • Vitamin/minerals supplement
Who can become a CPSP provider?
  • Physicians in family practice, obstetrics and gynecology, and general practice
  • Certified Nurse Midwife
  • Preferred Provider organizations
  • Clinics, county, community, and hospital

To improve the health status of all women, infants, children and adolescents, by assuring access to quality services, particularly those services that reduce the incidence of low birth weight and premature delivery, reduce maternal and infant mortality, and reduce the incidence of preventable diseases and disabling conditions among children.
